It seems a lot of people seem to not like the government "messing" in their business, at least not any additional business. I say that because you have people who are talking about holding on to their medicare(umm!!! That's a government social program). The irony of those protesting the loudest are those that need single payer the most. They can't afford health care and most don't have it.
It seems that people are scared mainly of the unknown, that is for those that are actually honest in their protest. I do believe that most of the "problem" in the town hall meetings currently are be positioned there directly and indirectly funded by health insurance companies trying to thwart efforts to fix a broken industry where unscrupulous individuals get over pulling the plug on those at deaths door.
This brings me to another point, people are afraid of the living will counseling that doctors could provide for those wanting to discuss saying that it is a "death bill" or something. This couldn't be any worse than what already exists. Ask many that have already had their premiums raised so high they couldn't afford it or dropped altogether or denied coverage when facing a cancer or high expense procedure.
I implore Americans to wake up and read, more than the "right-wing populism" propaganda. Think critically, look at what you see not just the emotions.
I wish more people were out when medicare was altered under the last adminstration.
As far as government, it does a great job when businessmen and special interest groups keep their hands out of politician's pockets(giving them money & favors) and when they aren't elected directly from the areas they are suppose to impartially legislate or regulate. In those situations it does a great job. Special interest groups have been trying to eliminate, or undermine any safety net that has been enacted (Social Security, Medicare, Ability of unions to form, FMLA,etc.) Of course some of these are watered down and problematic because of those already mentioned groups.
I hope we can get past this. A super power that cannot that does not consider the health of all its citizens is a sad superpower!
